Throat singing and frame drum

Torgeir Vassvik is a Sami artist who creates music at the interface between several musical genres. He combines joik and the Sami drum with elements such as Siberian throat singing and the sounds of nature. His compositions represent an encounter between traditional music and modern idioms, and he often presents them together with some of Norway’s most innovative musicians.

His debut album Sáivu, produced by Arve Henriksen, was released in 2006 to extremely favourable reviews. Vassvik has performed extensively in concerts and festivals in Norway and abroad, including the Tromsø International Jazz Festival, the Festival of North Norway, the Sami Winter Festival, the Easter Festival in Kautokeino, Màrkomeannu, La Pamparina Thiers, L’annee des VOIX, the Cultural Rucksack in Oslo and Akershus, Musique de Laponie – Sami Music at the Universities of Paris, Caen and Lyon, and “Dembildei” in Kyzyl, Siberia.
