Hardanger fiddler, born in Øystre Slidre, Valdres, in 1979
Jan Beitohaugen Granli is a popular fiddler for dances, and is in great demand at both festive gatherings and folk music competitions. Important teachers and sources of inspiration for him include Trygve Bolstad, Tore Bolstad, Magnus Dahleng, Harald Røine and Olav Jørgen Hegge. He studied folk music at Telemark University College, and graduated from the School for Instrumental Studies at the Ole Bull Academy. The group Helekins følgje (2002-2004) was formed by students from the Academy’s schools for instrumental and vocal studies. Granli competes in the highest category, A, on the Hardanger fiddle at the National Contest for Traditional Music, and has won first prize three times. In 2004 he was awarded the King’s Trophy for his achievement. He has won the Fanitulltevlinga competition at the Norwegian Folk Music Week in Ål twice. In 2005 he held a showcase concert at Folkelarm, the annual folk music industry trade show. He is currently working as a free-lance musician and a teacher at the music school in Valdres.
