Eide, Sturla
Sturla Eide plays the fiddle and Hardanger fiddle, and basis his work on traditional music from the Trøndelag counties. Ragnvald Bolme and Arild Hoksnes have served as his most important teachers and influences. Throughout the years he has built up a varied repertoire, and has found inspiration both in Norway and abroad. He arranges and composes music, and the tune “Dimmisjonspols” has already become a favourite among a number of folk musicians. Sturla Eide studied musicology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and has qualified for the elite Category A, for fiddle, in the National Contest for Traditional Music. He has considerable experience as a dance musician, especially with the groups Sturla Eides kvintett and Strengfolket. The first recording he made was together with fiddler Åsmund Svenkerud, with whom he performed as a duo for several years. He is currently a member of the groups Flukt (formed in 1999 as Gorrlaus) and sturla|andreas (since 2002). These groups both held showcase concerts at Folkelarm in 2005, and he participated there as a soloist the following year. He also collaborates with singer Heidi Skjerve on the Christmas programme På jorden fred og glede. He has been engaged as a teacher at the school for the arts in Orkdal since 1994, and his position there is now as a cultural promoter, where his responsibilities include teaching, arranging and performing activities. Eide received a one-year Government Grant for Artists in 2006, and will release his first solo album in 2007.
